WEG News:
Lexington, KY - There are 101 different athletes (some nominated on more than one horse) from 21 different states nominated to represent the United States at the biggest equestrian event in US history. The Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games is the first opportunity to see all eight disciplines: Dressage, Endurance, Eventing, Driving, Jumping, Para-Equestrian Dressage, Reining and Vaulting in one place at the same time when these games come to the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, KY September 25 - October10, 2010.

The USEF has named all its horse/rider combinations, drivers and vaulters to the Short Lists/Nominated Entries for each of the eight disciplines. From these groups the Definite Entries will be named to represent the United States. It will be these riders who will take on the world on their home turf as the World Games leaves Europe for the very first time.

Equestrian is one of only two sports governed by the International Olympic Committee where men and women compete as equals. There are 60 women on the Nominated Entry for the United States and 41 men. Of these nominated entries, Vaulter Ruby Robinson is the youngest at age 11 (she vaults on the Sundae Rush Team) and endurance rider Jan Worthington is 70.

Trenna Atkins Freestyle Seminar, August 7-8, 2010
Houston, TX at Rice University
By the Houston Dressage Society

Based in a wonderfully-equipped new classroom at Rice University, Trenna Atkins provided a rich, informative, and often interactive seminar. We met from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM both Saturday and Sunday, Augusts 7-8, 2010. We were so engrossed on Sunday that we didn’t even break for lunch, but munched on take-out sandwiches as Ms. Atkins continued with the session. Trenna prepared and delivered a first-class freestyle seminar. Main elements of the session were:

  • Detailed counsel and tips on designing, riding and judging freestyles, both the technical and artistic sides
  • “Need-to-know” about gaits, figures, patterns and movements as they relate to freestyles
  • “Need-to-know” about music and music selection as it relates to freestyles
  • Specifics about the forthcoming changes for 2011 national level freestyles
  • Differences when designing, riding and judging multi-participant freestyles: pas de deux and quadrille (more than two horse/rider pairs)
  • Dozens of carefully prepared audio video segments to illustrate points of her presentation
  • “How to” of computer-editing horse-movement video, music audio, and the two together
  • Several hours in which the full-group watched videos of various horses with clips (carefully separated) for walk, trot, canter, while Trenna played music alongside the video clip – so we could discuss “fit” of the music with the movement, horse, etc. Trenna had ready so many musical choices that often we could call out an idea for a song - and she would HAVE that piece – sometimes in several musical styles, including with and without vocals.
