The 2007 Horseperson of the Year for Region 9 is Kathryn Kyle |
As regional director since 2002, her contributions have been many and
significant. She organized and assisted with "L" programs, wrote monthly articles
for GMO newsletters and offered strong support for lower level riders and non-
competitors. To stay abreast of national and regional activities, she attended the
USDF annual and Region 9 summer meetings.
Kat is licensed with the USEF as an "r" dressage judge and has officiated
at a number of shows.
Before devoting her efforts primarily to dressage, she competed successfully
in hunter/jumper shows -- she and her horse even survived the devastating
tornado that hit Waco in 1972 during a Texas Hunter Jumper Association Show.
Assisting her parents in organizing THJA shows, she included dressage classes
as early as 1976. She has been successful in the horse breeding business and
several from her farm are competing in Region 9 shows.
Her qualifications for this award include:
- Continued support of the Omnibus, which benefits every member of Region 9.
- National work as well as regional support through unfailing prompt help to
others in their regional jobs.
- Represented our complex membership in professional form and style.
- Positive organizer and supporter of educational opportunities, conducted
business meetings professionally, and embraced our youth, who
are future dressage competitors and leaders.
- Kat has been a listener and a doer.
She deserves this award in recognition of her leadership, dedication and significant contributions to positively influence and
improve dressage in the region and nationally.

Guidelines |
Selection criteria for the USDF Region 9 Horse Person of the Year Criteria need to be broad and flexible. For one thing, we will be considering persons whose contributions are quite different and cannot be measured well against each other. They are not nearly so easy to compare or measure as home runs, touchdowns high jumps, etc.
The committee will consider persons who have influenced the development, growth, quality and popularity of dressage in a meaningful positive measure. The honor should be awarded to the horseman or woman whose has demonstrated superior sportsmanship, dedication, and the pursuit of excellence in the Region 9 dressage community for the current year.
The selection guidelines that may be used are as follows.
The person:
1. Contributed significant service,
2. Has made significant contribution,
3. Promoted dressage in some manner,
4. Promoted the Region by volunteering their time, expertise, or resources, and/or
5. Made a unique or creative contribution.
Persons to be considered and evaluated should fit into at least two of the following categories in which they have demonstrated creativity, originality, vision and sustained effort:
- Teaching riders and/or instructors
- Assuming positions of leadership in major dressage organizations
- Volunteering
- Judging
- Writing of books, articles or periodicals
- Acting as Technical Delegates and educating TDs
- Speaking at seminars, symposia, major meetings
- Competing at high International and National levels
- Assisting and inspiring youth and acting as role models
- Training and coaching
Priority will be given to persons who are nearing the end of their careers and those who are no longer active. Although deceased persons who should be remembered may also be considered, thought must be given to whether that person will be recognized with a memorial as well.
Solicitation for Nominations: Request for nominations should be made via all Region 9 GMO newsletters at least 30 days before nomination deadline.
Nominations: Members of Region 9 make nominations via mail, Fax or email. Only one nomination per member is allowed. Multiple nominations for the same person will not influence the final selection.
Deadline for Nominations: 45 days before presentation date.
